Medium.com Tutorial

Q: How do I publish an academic essay on Medium. com?

A: First you must sign up for an account at < www.medium.com > using either a Facebook or Twitter account. Create a temporary account at Facebook or Twitter if you do not have one already.  Medium.com does not send out spam or advertisements. Allow it permission to connect to your account. You may delete your medium.com account once grades are submitted at the end of the term.

Q: How do I write my essay?

A: Writing an essay on medium.com is very similar to publishing a blog post, for those of you who have read or written blogs on websites like Blogger or WordPress. Medium.com is also quite easy to use for those who have little or no experience with online writing.  [Note that Medium.com has trouble using Internet Explorer. Switch to another browser when you are first getting started].

Once you sign into your medium.com account you should look for the “Write a Story” button on the upper right hand side of the page. Click it.

You can immediately start typing. Pick a title and type it in the ‘headline’ area. After that begin typing the rest of your paper underneath it.

Medium.com will automatically save any changes you make as you type. There is no “Save” button. There is a small “Saved” message at the top of your page to confirm that your changes have been entered.

If you prefer you can write your papers for this class in a more conventional way on Microsoft Word. When you are near completion, simply upload your writing to medium.com using cut and paste.

Q: How do I publish my essay? Can I change what I have written after I have published it?

When you are ready to publish your essay, click the “Publish” button on the upper right of your screen. If you follow these instructions your writing will not be seen by the public or by your classmates. Only you and your instructor will be able to see your writing.

After you click “Publish” click the phrase “Public: Visibility.” Medium.com will make your writing public (if you like) but for our course purposes change “Public” to “Unlisted.” Your selection should look like the image below.

Done. Click “Save” at the bottom, then “Publish.”

If you have made any mistakes you can always return to your essay/writing, and click the “Edit” button on the upper right to make changes. IMPORTANT! You then need to hit the “Publish” button again to update your essay for your reader(s).

Remember that changes on Medium.com come with a time and date stamp. Any changes after the due date for essays is strictly prohibited and can result in a failing mark unless pre-approved by your instructor.
