TIMELINE ONE – THE LIFE AND TIMES OF MARY SHELLEY
This timeline looks at the life and historical context of Mary Shelley; timeline subjects might include friends, family, historical events and the events around the writing of the original Frankenstein “ghost” story. How can biographical and historical context add to an appreciation and understanding of the novel?
TIMELINE TWO – THE CHANGING STORY WORLD OF FRANKENSTEIN
This timeline looks at adaptations of the original story into film and television (for adults or for children) as well as differences in the original 1818 and 1831 editions of the book. What changes to or omissions from the original story have there been? How have actors portrayed the main characters differently? How have writers or dramatists today attempted to “update” the story to our times?
TIMELINE THREE – IMAGES OF THE ‘CREATURE’ IN POPULAR CULTURE
How have images of the creature changed over the years from movies to advertisements and cereal boxes to visualizations of GM “Franken” foods? How have the features or look of the creature changed over time? How is the creature used as a metaphor for the “unnatural” or the “monstrous”?
